The Magical Forest of Fontainebleau

Commissioned by the NKBV, this film explores the heart of bouldering: Fontainebleau. Known as "Bleau" to the locals, this vast forest is more than just a climbing area; it’s where the sport as we know it was born.

Guided by Bart van Raaij, author of guidebooks and a walking encyclopedia of the forest, we trace the footsteps of the early alpinists who used these sandstone blocks as a training ground for the Alps. From the invention of the first climbing shoes by Pierre Allain to the creation of the colour-coded circuits , we follow Bart as he guides us through the forests.

Capturing the heart of the forest didn't feel like work, but like a privilege. We spent a couple of days with an amazing crew, immersing ourselves in the quiet magic of Bleau. It wasn’t hard to get to know the place, but having Bart van Raaij with us made the experience unforgettable.

Bart is a walking archive. As we hiked through the forest, he had a new story to tell after every hundred meters. Sharing decades of knowledge about the rocks, the history, and the legends of the forest. His enthusiasm was infectious and we discovered this playground through the eyes of a local.
